but a means by which we arrive at that goal.”

In The Bleak Midwinter

January 14, 2011

Gierre Godley

In the bleak midwinter, I suppose we could all hibernate and wait for Spring, but not these four dancers. Gierre, Julie, James, and Ryan will sizzle it up, hot, and sweaty on Monday at the Ailey Citibank Theater. Three of my new works, one a premiere, will be archived in the cavernous theater at 55th & 9th avenues. Our video shoot will be provided by the beautiful, Marie Le Claire.  Marie’s lens has been filled with modern dance lately, from her work with pioneer, Douglas Dunn.  She also was involved with my last full-length concert at Ailey in 2009, so she is quite warmed-up to the dance scene!

Julie Fiorenza

Looking through the frosty, glass windows the other day at the  Ailey studios, you see the young, aspiring dancers in flatback at the barre, stretching to the drumbeats, but probably thinking, “when will this be over?” Or, “what’s for lunch?”  Just think, in another ten years, they’ll be at some open call audition somewhere, and maybe even dancing in Alvin Ailey’s  main company. From the outside looking-in though, even on a frigid day, sweat still drips on the marley floor. The hard work never stops.

James A Pierce III

Hard work is what created Julie’s solo, My Room, about her adoption from Korea; James and Ryan’s new duet, Heart Song; and Ryan and Gierre’s duet, Miles,  from that gorgeous piece, Pas de Deux off of Maria Schneider’s, Concert in the Garden.

I am relying on our small guest list to steam up the theater, providing the dancers the necessary motivation to work up a walloping, winter sweat! I’m looking forward to seeing them knock these three dances out of the park… Central Park??
